Admissions
The English Department receives hundreds of applications each year for its undergraduate programs. Out of these, only about 100 students are admitted, primarily based on their overall high school performance, with particular emphasis on their English language grade. Admission guidelines and procedures are set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Students from both the Science and Social Science branches of high school are eligible to apply through the Zankoline platform.
It is worth noting that English Department currently requires the highest tuition fee among all departments in College of Education for parallel and evening students. In addition, it has the highest admission requirement in terms of school grades, making it the most competitive department in the college.
Postgraduate admissions are also governed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in coordination with Salahaddin University. Applicants must apply through the university’s Higher Education Department and are required to sit for a scientific entrance exam as part of the selection process.
Alumni
The English Department is working to establish a strong alumni network that serves as a hub for past graduates to connect with one another and engage with current students. This network aims to foster mentorship, share success stories, and provide valuable insights into career paths. By bridging the gap between alumni and enrolled students, the initiative enhances learning experiences and helps expand job opportunities for fresh graduates as they transition into the professional world.
Graduate employability
Graduates of the English Department primarily pursue careers in teaching at both local and international institutions, including government and non-government schools. Many also choose to continue their studies by enrolling in postgraduate programs, either within the region or abroad.
In addition to teaching, a significant number of graduates work with international organizations based in the region, taking on various organizational and administrative roles.
Graduates of our postgraduate programs often go on to teach at higher education institutions and advance in their academic or professional careers.
Many of our graduates have gone on to become professional translators, establish language institutes, or launch successful online platforms for teaching English. Others have pursued advanced degrees abroad, achieving notable academic success and now holding high-ranking positions in schools, universities, and other educational institutions.

Opportunities for students
Students in the English Department have ample opportunities to excel in research across various sub-disciplines within the broader field of English Language Teaching. Early in their studies, students take writing courses before enrolling in the Research Writing module during their junior year. As seniors, they select a graduation project aligned with their interests and conduct small-scale research under the guidance of a faculty member. Throughout their research journey, students undergo two evaluations to assess the progress of their projects. Upon completion, students participate in a research discussion with two examiners to receive feedback and grades based on their final submissions.
Graduating students are encouraged to compete for the opportunity to present their research at the college’s annual research conference. Those shortlisted may also participate in university-level research conferences. Outstanding projects may be selected to represent the university at regional conferences, providing students with valuable exposure and experience.
